The National Planetarium

Kyiv planetarium is one of the largest planetariums in CIS. It was founded by world-renowned astronomer Sergei Konstantinovich Vsekhsviatsky. 1 January, 1952 Kiev Planetarium began its work, opening the door wide range of stakeholders in the knowledge of the mysteries of the universe.
The planetarium cooperates with leading astronomical academic institutions, other planetariums of Ukraine and other countries; it is a member of the International Society for planetariums.
In the Star Chamber of planetarium, which seats 320 spectators, there is a dome with 23.5 meters in diameter. In the center of the hall there is the main unit – the “Planetarium”. Kyiv planetarium received its name from the name of this unit.
The form of the “planetarium” is like a huge dumbbell – two large spheres connected by an arch. The spheres demonstrate the stars of Northern and Southern hemispheres of celestial spheres. This allows us to see at the Star Chamber not only the sky of Kiev, but any other place on Earth, visit the equator, the North or South Poles. Apparatus “planetarium” is able to compress the time so that it can display celestial phenomena that are difficult or even impossible to observe in reality, for example, changing of location of celestial bodies in the future comparison with the past.
The meetings under the stars held here include artistic programs and educational lectures that help pupils at the course of astronomy, geography and nature. One who wishes can visit the program of the weekend and see fantastic star shows, interesting for both children and adults.
At the Planetarium there is also a school of astronomy for children aged 7 to 10 years. Classes at this school are held in the game form. The listeners gain knowledge about the Solar system, stars and constellations, learn how to navigate in the sky. They take part in the demonstrative observations which are held at the Main Astronomical Observatory.
Planetarium is a place where you can see the stars even in the brightest day and learn many interesting things. It tells about the world around us: about the planets, galaxies and comets, the place of Man in the Universe and the mysteries of the Earth planet, and a lot of other things. The Planetarium also holds scientific and educational programs, astronomical tales for children, and literary and musical compositions, and meetings with prominent Ukrainian scientists.
At the moment the Planetarium is one of the most frequently visited cultural and educational institutions, which expand the astronomical knowledge.
