The National Museum of Literature

The National Museum of Literature is one of the most popular museum institutions; it is the major museum of literature and literary-memorial profile. Due to its unique exhibition, a accurate work, diverse cultural and educational activities the museum has become one of the most well-known in Ukraine.
The museum was created in 1981 in the building of the former Paul Galagan’s College; it was an educational institution founded by landowner and patron Gregory Galagan in memory of his son who untimely dead in 1871.
The museum was opened for visitors on July 2, 1981. The museum is a research and cultural centre of the literary museums in Ukraine. It collects and preserves reminders of material and spiritual culture, connected with the history of the development of oral and written creative work of Ukrainian people.
The collection of the museum has more than 80 thousand exhibits; it is a treasure of national values. Among the relics of the museum there are old publications of XVII-XVIII centuries, collections of essays by I.Kotlyarevskyi, T.Shevchenko, P.Kulish, M.Kostomarov, Ivan Franko issued during their lifetime; Lesia Ukrainka’s, P. Tychina’s, M. Rylskyi’s manuscripts; P.Myrnyi’s, I.Nechui-Levitsky’s, І.Bagryanyi’s and other well-known writers’ personal belongings, as well as chronicles and almanacs of XIX – early XX century. There is a unique exhibit – a handwritten book of XVI century called «Listvitsa» by Ioan Sinaiskyi and the first printed book «Apostle» by Ivan Fedorov.
In addition, the museum has the materials of the world literature, among which an important place has the two-volume edition «The Poetry of the Georgian people», edited by N. Bazhan, A. Nowitski and S. Chikovani.
Exposition is organized in chronological order and shows the literary process in Ukraine since the times of Kievan Rus till present days. The team is permanently working on the museum’s exhibition updates, introduces new materials about the writers.
There is a specially created program “For a Spiritual Revival of Ukraine” in the museum. Literary meetings, festivals of culture, awarding of literary prizes, premieres of new books, and literary evenings with the participation of writers, artists, and scientists are being held here. There is the club of modern literature, Music Room, the School of ethnology working at the museum.
The National Museum of Ukraine opened a branch – the Literary-Memorial Museum Nicholai Bazhan.
